Regional Planning and City Management

Objective

Master’s Degree

In order to prepare qualified personnel to work in public administration and in certain fields of the private sector, the course provides theoretical and practical sources in regional planning and urban management. It also seeks to foster communication among professionals from various backgrounds. As a result, this course gives them a wide understanding of the potential for developing and resolving issues that have an influence on the area and the city. The program carries out studies and research on significant themes, such as the effects of the oil industry and the Port of Açu Complex on the economy and society, as well as on concerns like education, housing, historic heritage, health, and other social demands.

Doctoral Degree

The course is structured according to its area of concentration, lines of research, and disciplines to provide the graduates with theoretical and practical knowledge, stimulating their scientific, critical, practical, and technical perspectives. The theoretical background and conceptual analysis are integrated and interdisciplinary, based on the fields of Economics, Sociology, Political Science, and Engineering, all of which emphasize the ethical attributes and transparency intrinsic to managers. Practical application in empirical studies in the area of planning and management is prioritized, with new approaches and tools being presented, in part, by the disciplines related to decision making inherent to the planner’s or manager’s profession.

It is expected of the PhD graduated from the course that he/she will be able to work in planning and strategic management, and be an advisor and consultant in various activities, such as analysis, elaboration, implementation, operationalization, and evaluation of policies, plans, programs, and projects, as well as in public discussions of interest to society.

The themes and discussions address the local, municipal, regional, national, and international levels, focusing on issues associated with regional planning and urban management, including problems specific to the region in which they are located, as are those relating to large projects, such as those of the oil industry and the Porto do Açu, located in the region.

In addition, the course is focused on qualifying PhD students to work in education and research, as well as enhancing their professional practice. It is expected that the PhD graduate will be in a position to produce knowledge and publish high-quality scientific work. As such, the goal is to prepare, qualify, and update researchers and managers, promoting the integration between university and society, as the studies seek solutions that foster social well-being.

The implementation of the doctorate also strengthens the Institution of Higher Education as a research and information center, and as a place for debates and seminars, besides the constant participation and holding of scientific events.
