Course Description of Compulsory Courses

Master’s and Doctoral Programs

Economy and Territory in Brasil – 30 hrs.
The development and territorial configuration in Brazil: regional heritage and industrial concentration, from the 1950s to current times. The relative loss of the main metropolitan regions, the growth of medium-sized cities and small urban centers. The agrarian issue. Employment and social exclusion. Brazil in the early 21st century: the changes in patrimony; denationalization and unemployment; the new role of agriculture. The competitive use of territory. Recent challenges of Brazilian capitalism.


State and Public Policies – 30 hrs.
Basic concepts in public policy: public and private; public and state, public and government. Typologies. Constitution of the public sphere: parliaments; political parties; interest groups; institutional structures and media. The formulation of the public agenda and planning. Implementation and evaluation of public policies. Characteristics of public policies in Brazil: clientelism and bureaucratic isolation; federalism and decentralization; populism and corporativism.

Regional Planning – 30 hrs.
Approach to the Brazilian experience of regional planning and the implementation of regional policies focusing on the socio-historical context, its theoretical bases, projects and socio-spatial developments: polarization, concentration, inequality and the influence of regionalism. The importance of planning in the 20th and 21st century. Intervening elements in the planning process. The technical-scientific and political dimensions of planning and management and their impact on the Brazilian interregional division. The regional problems, planning proposals and the multiscale reflection.  

City Management – 30 hrs.
Presentation of concepts, theories and categories of analysis: nature and meaning of the urban network; urban functions and city hierarchies. Urbanization in Brazil: the general process. Perspectives on Planning and Management of cities. Urban policy: City Statute and Master Plan.  Globalization and restructuring of the urban network. Considerations about the recent dynamics of the Brazilian urban network.

 

Only Doctoral Program

Scientific Methodology – 30 hrs.

Methodology of scientific knowledge. Foundations of qualitative research: problematization and hypothesis formulation. Planning and evaluation of qualitative research. Qualitative research methods: Process Tracing, Case Study and Focus Group.


Only Master’s Program

Research Seminar – 30 hrs.
Science and common sense. The knowledge production. Structure of scientific publications. The standardization and reproducibility of knowledge and the research project. Scientific journals. Research at UCAM. Construction of a research problem.


Research Techniques – 30 hrs.
Studies on the scientific research methodology, questioning, and formulation of hypotheses, procedures and methods. Quantitative and qualitative methods of social research. Design of research instruments. Planning, design and structuring of scientific papers.
