Campus Facilities
Computer Laboratories
UCAM-Campos has a set of nine computer labs equipped with teaching resources for practical classes. Seven laboratories are intended for undergraduate and graduate users; one is exclusively for researchers with ongoing projects and for master’s degree students.
The Candido Mendes University has been concerned about periodically updating its computer resources as a way to avoid the obsolescence of the machines. Thus, the Computer Center maintains minimum criteria for the speed and memory of the machines. The hardware components are of commercial brands of recognized quality and special care has been taken in their specification, as a way to avoid errors of hardware compatibility.
The master’s course has at its disposal important software and databases, among which are ESRI ArcGIS 9.2; SPSS 10.0; microdata from the Brazilian demographic censuses (1970, 1980, 1991 and 2000); microdata from the National Household Sample Survey (1992 to 2003); the digital mesh of Brazilian municipalities (1997, 2001 and 2005); the digital mesh of urban and rural census sectors (2000); International Chart to the Millionth; and various satellite images.
Libraries
The UCAM-Campos library, available to the master’s degree course, occupies an area of easy access within the university campus, where there are lockers, terminals for consultation, a reading room, rooms for group study and rooms for individual study, some with notebook connection and Internet access available. The multimedia resources include a room for Internet research and remote consultation and a multimedia room. The policy for updating the collection is based on course syllabuses, suggestions from the master’s coordination, professors, students, and general works for culture, entertainment and leisure.
Among the services offered to students are full access to the Capes Periodical Portal; access to information available in the main Brazilian libraries and in the British Library; technical support in the elaboration of academic works. It is also worth mentioning that the UCAM Library system’s collection is available to all master’s degree students and contains books, periodicals, videotapes, monographs, theses, and other materials in different formats.
Physical infrastructure
The space reserved for full-time master’s degree course professors comprises 8 individual, air-conditioned rooms with computers. For master’s degree classes, UCAM-Campos has six air-conditioned classrooms exclusively for graduate students, equipped with data-show, overhead projector, slide projector, TV and DVD player. Its physical research space at the UCAM-Campos Research Center – CEPECAM – has served as support for the research developed by the master’s course professors and consists of a set of three rooms with computers for exclusive use.
